Wildcard 2

Wildcard 2

Central Point Software, Inc. (1983)

Introduced as the Alaska Card by Central Point Software and later renamed the Wildcard 2, this copycard was designed and sold by Central Point Software, makers of Copy II Plus. East Side Software (makers of the original Wildcard and Wildcard Plus, made the cards and later marketed it themselves. The Wildcard 2 was an upgraded version of the Wildcard, with most of the utilities in ROM and modifications to work with the Apple //e and 128K of RAM. It also worked in Apple ][, ][+, and Franklin computers.

The Wildcard 2 (like all "copycards") was used for backing up protected software. When the button was pressed, an interupt was generated and the entire 48K, 64K, or in a //e, 128K of memory, including the program that was running at the time, could be saved to a disk. The furnished utilites let you either make a "turnkey" boot disk that booted into the captured program or save the memory contents as a file that could be run from a diskette or hard drive. Other utilities allowed you to clear the memory before booting so that unused protions could be excluded from the saved file, making the file smaller. You could also view the text and graphics screens and send them to a printer.

Thanks to Thierry Bauvoi for supplying the photos of the card and box, the screenshot, the image of the Wildcard 2 Utilities Disk, and for scanning the manual.

Wildcard 2 Utilities Disk
This utility disk for the Wildcard 2 allowed you to make files that could be saved to a diskette or hard drive and make files that would run without a Wildcard 2 present in the machine. You could also save chunks of memory for disassembly and modification and erase/view/print the graphics and text screens. This is a Shrinkit disk archive (.sdk) of  a 5.25" diskette.

Central Point Software ad for the Alaska Card comparing it to the Wildcard.

Central Point Software ran a series of ads proclaiming "You need software insurance" and touting the Wildcard 2, as well as their Copy II Plus and Copy II PC programs:
Avoid the I.R.S. (diskette stapled to tax return.)
What if ... your software gets too soft? (disk being melted by the sun.)
Having problems with retrieval? (Dog with disk in it's mouth.)
Cat on a soft thin disk. (Cat clawing disks.)
